Meditation has been around for thousands of years. There are several different types of meditation that can be used for various purposes, needs, or specific reasons.
Most meditation involves the practice of sharpening your focus and attention and connecting with your mind and body.
Some of the benefits of meditation are stress relief and focusing your mind to be attentive.
Mindfulness Meditation
Mindfulness meditation originated from Buddhist teachings and is perhaps the most popular type of meditation.
With mindfulness meditation, you pay attention to your thoughts as they flow through your mind. You don’t judge the thoughts or try to make sense of them, you simply observe and notice any thought patterns. This type of meditation combines concentration, and awareness. You may find it helpful to focus on an object or your breath while you explore your thoughts and feelings that come up.
Visualization Meditation
With visualization meditation you focus on visualizing positive thoughts and images. Visualization involves imagining a setting and adding as much detail as you can to bring it to life. Some types of visualization meditation involve imagining yourself achieving specific goals. This can greatly increase your focus and motivation.
Many people use visualization meditation to boost their mood, reduce stress, and center their mind and body with inner peace.
Focused Meditation
This type of meditation consists of focusing on something internal or external, like your breathing or an object. This practice is great for those who want to sharpen their focus and attention.
It can sometimes be difficult as a beginner to hold your focus for longer than a few seconds, but keep at it. With time and practice you will get it. If your mind does wander, come back to the practice and refocus.
Spiritual Meditation
Spiritual meditation is focusing on a deeper understanding of spiritual and/or religious meaning. Spiritual meditation can be practiced at home or in a place of worship and is great for those who seek spiritual growth and a deeper connection to a higher power or spiritual force.
Mantra Meditation
Mantra meditation has deep roots in Hindu and Buddhist traditions. With this type of meditation you repeat a word, a sound, or a phrase to clear the mind. Your mantra can be spoken loudly or quietly.
Practice chanting the mantra for some time and eventually you’ll be more alert and in tune with your surroundings. This will allow you to experience a deeper level of awareness.
Some people enjoy mantra meditation because they find it easier to focus on a word than on their breath.
The most popular types of meditation
Meditation takes practice so don’t get frustrated in the beginning because it is not doing what you expected. As you continue learning how to meditate good things will come.
These are just a few of the different types of meditation techniques as there are many more. Good luck and keep practicing!
